1. Pigeon John – Hello Everybody – I’m a fan of Pigeon John and his music. He likes to make fun of himself in his music and never swears in his songs. This is a little more serious telling a story of trying to come up and how hip-hop influenced him throughout his life.
2. Immortal Technique – Harlem Streets – Very political depicting strong images, poverty, government neglection, very related to the material we covered in unit 1 of the class.
3. The Fugees – Ready or Not – This song is probably more widely known, I remember first hearing it in the driveway while playing basketball when I was in 5th grade. The catchy rhythm is what attracted me at first and as I grew older I appreciated it for its lyrical content as well
4. De La Soul – Buddy – I figured after a few serious songs I’d throw in a lighter more fun approach to hip-hop. Surprisingly I didn’t include any songs from A Tribe Called Quest but this has a few members in this song as well.
5. Jurassic 5 – Work It Out – Jurassic 5 is always a favorite coming from the West Coast which I listened to a lot more when I was California. This song included Dave Matthews and was in their 2006 album so its more widely known. I think it was also featured on Madden 07 which boosted its popularity.
6. Pigeon John – Money Back Guarantee – Another Pigeon John, he likes to tell stories in his songs. This is about him trying to get with a girl that is better than what he would be able to hook up with. Gives some funny details into the characters life and demeanor.
7. Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 – The Message – A true classic, I’ve heard the beat in too many different songs. I also included the video in my unit 2 report. Aside from the dress, the song reaches out to its audience through its truthful lyrics
8. The Visionaries – In The Good – Wanted to turn the pace up a little bit to get away from the slower rappin. Visionaries always have some great music to listen too, this one particularly talks about the hood and growing up in it.
9. Notorious BIG – Who Shot Ya – Probably not in the underground genre of hip-hop, nonetheless it was an extremely controversial song between the 2pac – BIG wars going on.
10. Jurassic 5 – Freedom – Back to that old skool sound with the records playing and a the political message of striving for freedom within races, primarily African-American
11. De La Soul – Me Myself and I – Turning the beat back around is De La Soul with a song strengthening their belief in what that do, themselves, and being emcee’s in general.
12. Jurassic 5 – Concrete Schoolyard – Great lyrics, old skool sound, harmony from the crew, it’s one of their earlier works and takes some stabs at the fake rappers and bringing it back to the origins of hip-hop.
13. Klashnekoff – Its Murda – Definitely a different approach then most the mixtape, Klashnekoff is a UK emcee who speaks a lot of violence , very image oriented, very aggressive, and rebellious. Nonetheless.. it gets stuck in my head and when you get passed the surface it has a good message underneath.
